Women Will Get Presidential Vote Out

Lifetime Poll Shows Some Favor Clinton, But 77% Have Yet To Commit To Candidate

By Multi Channel News Staff -- Multichannel News, 11/7/2007 6:35:00 AM

While Hillary Clinton’s run at the presidency is raising women’s interest in the 2008 election, more than three-quarters of the gender have yet to commit to any candidate.

Those are among the findings of Lifetime Networks’ non-partisan “Every Woman Counts” campaign. Results of the poll, derived from an Oct. 25-28 telephone survey of 1003 voting age women in the U.S. by Opinion Research Corp., found that 82% will definitely or probably vote in next year’s presidential election. However, 77% of those surveyed indicated that they had not yet committed to any candidate.

Results also showed that with Clinton as the first viable female presidential candidate, nearly one in four women say that they are paying more attention to the race, while one-fifth report they are more likely to vote with the Democratic New York Senator in the race.

Moreover, Of those more likely to vote because of her candidacy, 62% indicate they will vote to elect Clinton her the first woman president, compared to 35% who would vote against her.

“With most women still uncommitted to a candidate, but more women paying attention to this election, the candidates of both parties now have a tremendous opportunity to reach women, including the 35 million eligible women who did not vote in 2004,” said Meredith Wagner, executive vice president, public affairs, Lifetime Networks, in a statement. “Women told us they didn’t vote because they were busy, but also because they didn’t feel their vote mattered and they didn’t know enough about the candidates or the issues. Through Lifetime’s year-long, nonpartisan Every Woman Counts campaign, we look forward to bringing women’s top concerns to the forefront and encouraging them to make their voices loud and clear at the ballot box.”

First launched in 1992 and now entering its fifth presidential election cycle, Every Woman Counts aspires to ensure that issues that are important to women are part of the campaign dialogue during election season; encourages women to run for public office; and motivates women to register and vote.
