Mexicanal Hits U.S., Plans Daily Newscast

By Laura Martinez -- Multichannel News, 11/20/2007 4:52:00 AM MT

Mexicanal, the Mexico-based channel created by Cablecom and Castalia Communications, this month announced its release for broadcasters throughout the U.S. The network, which features programming geared to Mexicans, was launched in August 2005 on DirecTV Más and is now negotiating carriage with several cable operators. “We have an agnostic vision of distribution,” says Luis Torres-Bohl, CEO of Castalia Communications. “We know we can reach [our audiences] through DTH, cable or multicast.”

Torres-Bohl said Mexicanal, which currently reaches 1 million U.S. homes, is close to announcing “several agreements with cable operators and companies that operate TV channels” though he declined to give specifics.

Meanwhile, the network, which features programming from public broadcasters, independent producers, and local access stations in various regions across Mexico, is set to air Noticias MX 24, a half-hour daily newscast produced in San Luis Potosí offering news and information relevant to Mexicans living in the U.S. and Canada. A Nov. 26 soft launch will be followed by a hard launch in January, according to Torres-Bohl. An editorial team will include correspondents in Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, Chicago, and Vancouver and Toronto.

“This will be a continental perspective to news and news that is of interest to Mexicans living throughout North America,” he said.
