Weather Channel Bolsters ‘Forecast Earth’

Weekly Series Expands to Hour, Replaces Anchor

By Kent Gibbons -- Multichannel News, 1/8/2008 5:31:00 AM

The Weather Channel is lengthening weekly series Forecast Earth to one hour, with Natalie Allen replacing Heidi Cullen (who remains a contributor) as anchor and new contributors including Bill Nye, “The Science Guy.”

The climate-change-centered program airs Saturdays at 5 p.m. ET, and the jump from a 30-minute format will allow it to “delve deeper into the issues surrounding climate change, while giving viewers perspective on how to easily make green living part of their daily routines,” the channel said in a statement attributed to Kaye Zusmann, VP of programming strategy and development.

Cullen will continue as the scientific expert reporting on issues of climate change for the channel while also taking a position with Climate Central at Princeton University, a newly formed, non profit, non partisan organization dedicated to providing the public as well as policy makers with the latest peer-reviewed information on global climate change.

Allen, the new anchor and field reporter, has been an on-air correspondent and anchor at MSNBC and CNN.

Other new regular contributors will be Marcus Eriksen and Bill Nye.  Eriksen has been a regular contributor on The Weather Channel doing Commando Weather segments, including using himself as a human guinea pig in scenarios such as standing knee deep in a landfill or crawling through a storm drain. Nye recently began hosting a Climate Quiz during primetime TWC show Abrams & Bettes - Beyond the Forecast.
