‘Zoey’ Zooms To Series Record

Third-Season Finale Of Spears' Show Nets 7.27 Million Watchers

By R. Thomas Umstead -- Multichannel News, 1/9/2008 4:31:00 AM

The controversy over Jamie Lynn Spears’s real-life pregnancy didn’t stop fans of her Nickelodeon series Zoey 101 from tuning in to the show’s season 3 finale last Friday.

In fact, the premiere of the one-hour movie on Jan. 4 drew a series-high 7.27 million viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research data.

The cliffhanger concluder, in which Spears’s character was forced to choose whether to live abroad with her parents or remain at her boarding school, easily bested the average of 2.94 million viewers for season three, according to Nielsen Media Research data.

The finale comes less than a month after the 16-year-old Spears told tabloid OK! Magazine she’s pregnant. Since the announcement, a number of publications have called for Nickelodeon to shelve the show’s fourth season -- set to debut next month -- due to the potentially negative influence Spears’ pregnancy could have on the show’s impressionable tween-targeted audience. .

But Nickelodeon has already said it has no plans to change the February debut of the show’s fourth season,
which has already been taped.
