Ion Media Plugs In New Comcast Accord

Pact Provides Extension For Flagship Service, Carriage For Diginets

By Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, 1/14/2008 9:19:00 AM

Ion Media Networks has struck a multi-layered carriage agreement with the Comcast Corp.

Under the deal terms of which were not disclosed, the company scored a renewal for flagship network Ion Television with the nation’s largest distributor. The pact also guarantees a certain amount of distribution for diginets, Qubo, a multilingual, literacy service aimed at children, and Ion Life, which targets mature adults by focusing on healthy lifestyle options, personal growth and wellness.

Ion Media also inked a “hunting license” to pursue carriage with other Comcast systems, according to company officials.

Comcast also distributes Ion broadcast station affiliates in a number of markets.

“Ion Media offers a unique programming mix that is family-oriented and appeals to a wide range of viewers,” said Comcast senior vice president, content acquisition Jennifer Gaiski in a statement. “By adding Qubo and Ion Life networks to our lineups in select markets, we’re giving our customers even more value, with programming that’s especially tailored for specific audiences, including children and older adults.”

Added Steve Friedman, president, Ion Media Networks Distribution: “This agreement is another milestone in our multi-platform network strategy and reflects our commitment to working with our cable partners to offer digital value-added products for underserved and diverse special interest TV categories.”
