Verizon has made its interactive media guide available to all FiOS TV customers in the 13 states where it offers the service, replacing the last vestiges of the Microsoft-developed guide the telco originally offered.
Earlier this week, the telco said it launched the guide in New Jersey, southeastern Pennsylvania and Delaware, following its deployment in western Pennsylvania, California, Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Texas and Virginia.
The FiOS interactive media guide is able to search across broadcast TV listings, 10,000 video-on-demand titles and a subscriber's own DVR recordings. The guide features hierarchical, tabbed menus and allows text entry via an on-screen keyboard, scroll wheel or “cell-phone style” interface using the letters on a number keypad.
It also includes interactive-TV applications, called Widgets, that offer weather and traffic reports based on ZIP code. Verizon plans to provide additional content -- including games, podcasts and Internet video -- through the same guide later this year.
After first using an interactive program guide provided by Microsoft, Verizon in 2006 took over development of the software internally.
FiOS TV is currently available to 800,000 households in New Jersey, 425,000 households in southeastern Pennsylvania and 105,000 households in Delaware, Verizon said. There is no additional charge for the media guide.
