Writers Guild East Plans Awards 'Event'

Striking WGA Branch Says 'Simple Event' Will Rally Support

By Linda Moss -- Multichannel News, 1/18/2008 9:25:00 AM

The Writers Guild of America East will honor nominees and recipients of the 2008 WGA Awards at an informal reception at the Hudson Theatre at the Millennium Broadway Hotel Feb. 9, the striking union said Friday.

“We have chosen to honor the nominees and recipients of our awards in the context of our ongoing strike against the studios and networks,” WGA East president Michael Winship said. “This will be a simple event that will rally us together as a union, note the solidarity of our membership in diMichael Winshipfficult times and recognize the creativity and skill of our members that make our industry possible.”

The WGA’s counterpart on the West Coast, the WGA West, previously decided to cancel its own Los Angeles-based Feb. 9 awards show, due to its strike.

But on the East Coast, Winship noted that the WGA East recognizes excellence in television and radio news and documentaries, programs that are written and produced under contracts separate from those currently in dispute.

“Approximately a third of our members work under these separate contracts, including members at CBS News, ABC News and PBS,” Winship said. “Recognizing their achievements as well as their commitment to and solidarity with their union colleagues is a vital part of our decision to hold this recognition reception.”
