Man on Wire, the documentary recounting the tale of Philippe Petit’s legendary high-wire walk between Manhattan’s Twin Towers in 1974, won a pair of awards at the Sundance Film Festival on Jan. 26.
The Discovery Films's theatrical earned World Cinema Jury and World Cinema Audience honors at Sundance Saturday night.
Based on Petit’s book To Reach the Clouds, the film was directed by James Marsh and produced for Discovery Films by Wall to Wall Productions in association with Red Box Films, the BBC and the UK Film Council New Cinema Fund.
The documentary combines never-before-seen archival footage and photographs with participant interviews and dramatic reconstructions to tell the story of Petit’s performance, which has been described as the “artistic crime of the 20th century.”
“We salute Philippe Petit, James Marsh and the talented team that created this wonderful film," said Clark Bunting, president, Discovery Studios, in a statement. “We also want to thank the Sundance Film Festival, the World Cinema jurors and, particularly, the audience who shared our fascination, appreciation and wonder at the incredible story told in Man on Wire.”
