No Ham And Eggers Here

Spike Serves Up Competitive Eating Action As Super Bowl Halftime Alternative

By Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, 1/28/2008 9:57:00 AM

If Tom Petty isn't exactly your musical taste, Spike TV has a Super Bowl XLII halftime menu option you may want to sink your teeth into instead.

The male-targeted service will present MLE Chowdown Championship: Ham N’ Egg as soon as theMajor League Eating's Joey Chestnut gun sounds on the first half in Glendale, Ariz. Feb. 3. The commercial-free event will showcase such top Major League Eating gourmands as Joey Chestnut and Patrick Bertoletti trying to set the pace on ham and egg consumption. The event was recently taped in Las Vegas.

On the under card: Eight top eaters will go after Sonya Thomas’ record of 65 hard-boiled eggs, while others, including Chestnut, Bertoletti. Tim “Eater X” Janus, Juliet Lee, Tim ‘Gravy” Brown, Rich LeFevre and Juris Shibamaya, will engage in whole spiral-ham gorging.

The legendary Kobayashi, who was dethroned by Chestnut during the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest last year before a national audience on ESPN, will not participate due to an injured jaw.

Other recent MLE events on Spike included the Turkey Bowl, St. Patrick's Day ChowDown and Wedges N' Wings.
