Thursday’s CNN Democratic California primary debate was a record-breaker, turning out to be the highest-rated primary debate in cable-news history.
The debate, held in the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles, drew 8.3 million overall viewers to rank as the No. 1 cable news debate, according to Nielsen Media Research data. The Jan. 31 forum from 8 p.m. to 9: 52 p.m. (ET) easily outpaced the 4.9 million viewers CNN attracted for the Democratic debate in South Carolina on Jan. 21.
Last night’s face-off between Sens. Barack Obama (Ill.) and Hillary Clinton (N.Y.) wa
s tops with every key demographic with 3.3 million 25-to-54 viewers; 3 million 18-to-49 watchers; and 1.3 million 18-to-34 viewers.
The latter marked the largest delivery of any broadcast or cable-new primary debate in this election cycle.
Thus far, CNN holds the top six ratings performances with debates during the current campaign.
ABC News, though, holds the top spot relative to the highest viewing, as 9.4 million people tuned in its Jan. 5 coverage of the Democratic debate in New Hampshire.
