Logo Leaps Into Theatrical Production

Feature, Based On Network's 'Noah’s Arc' Series, Slated For Fall Debut

By Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, 2/14/2008 7:10:00 AM

Logo is jumping into the theatrical waters with a feature developed from one of its series.

The network has green-lit Noah’s Arc: Jumping the Broom (working title), a picture based on the series Noah’s Arc, which centers on four black gay friends living in Los Angeles. The film is expected to be released during the second half of the year.

Although it has not yet lined up a distribution partner, production will commence in Canada next month, according to network officials.

In tandem with Noah’s Arc creator Patrik-Ian Polk and series star Darryl Stephens (Noah on the show), Logo announced news about the film via its DowneLink.com social networking site for lesbianDarryl Stephens as Noah on Logo series Noah's Arc, gay, bisexual and transgender people of color and Afterelton.com, a news and information site for gay men.

The wedding-themed movie is expected to pick up with the series’ second-season cliffhanger. Stephens co-stars, Doug Spearman (Chance), Rodney Chester (Alex) and Christian Vincent (Ricky), are all involved with the project.

The series -- which bowed on the network in October 2005 and led to a sophomore campaign that debuted in October 2006 -- is one of Logo’s more popular series, gauged by viewer mail and Webpage traffic, according to network officials. Logo, which counts some 30 million TV subscribers, is not yet rated by Nielsen Media Research.

The show, which was the first television series about gay people of color, follows the lives and loves of four African-American gay men looking for love and signs of intelligent life in Los Angeles.

“We're proud that our first flagship series will now be Logo's first original movie,” said Brian Graden, president, entertainment, MTV Networks Music Group and Logo president, in a statement “Logo and the show’s fans have been with Noah and his friends from the beginning and we're excited to see that Patrik-Ian Polk will be continuing their stories on the big screen.”

Polk will direct the film, which he will also produce along with Carol Ann Shine. The screenplay comes Polk and John R. Gordon. Also returning as executive producers: Noreen Halpern and John Morayniss from Blueprint Entertainment.  The Noah’s Arc series was created by and executive-produced by Polk and his Tall Skinny Black Boy Productions.

“I'm thrilled to have this opportunity to take this cult hit TV show to the big screen. With the exception of the many 70s hit shows to get the film treatment, very few television series get to make the move to movie theatres. It's a bold experiment, but I've come to expect nothing less from the MTV Networks/Logo brand,” Polk said in a statement. “It's been a little wait for the fans, but I promise they won't be disappointed. Jumping The Broom definitely takes this story to the next level in a big way.”

The expectation is that following its theatrical window, the film will wind up on Logo’s air, network executives said.
