OpenTV Gets Embedded In 100 Million TVs, Set-Tops

Interactive TV Developer Marks Milestone

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 2/18/2008 7:00:00 PM

OpenTV, a developer of interactive television software, said more than 100 million digital set-top boxes and televisions with its two-way technology have been deployed worldwide since 1997.

The OpenTV platform has been licensed to 56 network operators and 44 set-top box manufacturers, including News Corp., EchoStar, Liberty Global, Pace Micro Technology and STMicroelectronics.

According to OpenTV, with 100 million digital devices in the field, its technology is more pervasive than the combined units sold of Microsoft’s Xbox, Sony’s PlayStation3 and Nintendo Wii since their respective launches.

The 510-employee company, based in San Francisco, is controlled by Swiss software company Kudelski Group. Liberty Media sold its interest in OpenTV to Kudelski in October 2006.

OpenTV last August announced that president and CEO Alan Guggenheim had resigned "for personal reasons" after less than a year in the job. The company appointed Ben Bennett, formerly senior vice president of customer operations, to be chief operating officer and acting CEO.
