Union Leaders Say Call Yes Vote 'Overwhelming'

The members of the Directors Guild of America have approved their contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
The DGA declined to state the percentage of the 13,500 directors who voted to approve the contract negotiated last month, other than to say the approval rate was overwhelming. The contract provides compensation for use of content on the Internet as well as higher residuals and improvements in compensation for basic cable contracts.
DGA president Michael Apted, in a prepared statement, said the contract set a series of important precedents "crucial to our survival in this digital age" including jurisdiction in new media, a doubling of the home video rates for titles sold electronically and a gross based payment for ad-supported streaming.
The DGA sent the contract details to directors, along with a ballot on the contract, beginning Jan. 17 and the tally was completed Feb. 20. The current DGA contract expires June 30.
"Our negotiations with the DGA proved beyond any doubt that when both parties are prepared to bargain seriously, groundbreaking new media labor pacts can be reached without resorting to harmful and unnecessary strikes," the AMPTP said in a prepared statement, alluding to the recently concluded strike by the Writers Guild of America over its contract. Writers are scheduled to vote on their proposed pact Feb. 25.
