By Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, 2/27/2008 1:13:00 AM MT

TBS’s first pitch on its new Sunday afternoon Major League Baseball package features the defending World Series champion Boston Red Sox visiting the Toronto Blue Jays at the Rogers Centre on April 6.

Bosox's Josh BeckettThe network, which as part of its new deal with MLB has pinch-hit its 30-year run of of Atlanta Braves games  for a national slate of 26 Sunday-afternoon contests, will air Sox-Jays at 1 p.m. that day.

During its first two months of games, TBS will feature three appearances by the New York Yankees, including an April 27 rematch of last year’s American League Division Series against the Cleveland Indians, and a second by the Sox, versus the Milwaukee Brewers at Fenway Park on May 18. The New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Cubs and Detroit Tigers are also in TBS’s on-deck circle.

The games will be blacked out in each participating teams’ home TV territory, according to Turner officials.

“For the first time in Turner Sports’ 30-year history of MLB coverage we’re proud to present an exciting weekly package that showcases some of the top teams and players in baseball,” said Turner Sports executive producer Jeff Behnke in a statement.  “Every Sunday afternoon for 26 straight weeks fans will find key match-ups and marquee names as we follow the dramatic storylines of the regular season leading into our second straight MLB postseason on TBS.”

In its inaugural postseason telecasts, TBS notched a 26% with its MLB Division Series in total number of viewers over the coverage by all other national MLB carriers in 2006. The ratings win led the TBS to its best-ever Nielsen week last October.
