Regional Sports Network Will Televise Southpaw's First Mets Start Friday

New York Mets fans will get to see the franchise’s prized off-season acquisition on display tomorrow when regional sports network SNY televises the club’s spring-training opener Friday.

Southpaw Johan Santana is slated to take the mound when the Amazins take on the St. Louis Cardinals at 1 p.m. on Feb. 29.

All told, SNY will produce 16 exhibition games, 11 of which will be telecast on its air, and the balance on WPIX-TV, channel 11, the CW affiliate serving the New York metro area.

Over the course of the grapefruit league action, the Mets will meet the 2007 World Series champion Boston Red Sox, National League East division rival the Atlanta Braves, and senior circuit and Brooklyn progenitor, the Los Angeles Dodgers, now managed by ex-New York Yankees skipper, Joe Torre.

SNY, which is owned by the Mets, Time Warner Cable and Comcast Corp., which manages the operation, also announced that field reporter Kevin Burkhardt will call seven spring training games, sharing spring training play-by-play duties with Gary Cohen, who is slated to call every Mets regular-season games, produced by SNY in 2008. Burkhardt’s first Mets's play-by-play telecast is scheduled for March 3 at 1 p.m., against the Braves.
