Microsoft has signed a deal with Move Networks to incorporate Move’s video-streaming technology into the next version of its Silverlight multimedia platform.
Microsoft Silverlight competes with Adobe Systems’ Flash Player and related tools for creating online video players.
The Move software, which delivers video in discrete files chunks for smoother playback, will be integrated into Silverlight 2.0, which Microsoft has released as a beta.
The companies did not disclose terms of the deal, although Move Networks CEO John Edwards noted the agreement is not exclusive.
Move Networks’ Internet video player is used by ABC, Discovery Communications, ESPN360.com, the CW, Fox and other media companies. The software also supports Adobe Flash and HTML.
Edwards said the integration of Move Networks’ video player with Silverlight will simplify the ability of Web developers to incorporate new features into their video players.
“We think Microsoft is being open here and is allowing us to do all kinds of amazing things,” he said.
For example, Edwards said, Web developers can more easily overlay navigational components over video and synchronize overlays using Silverlight, compared with Adobe ActionScript.
Move Networks, based in American Fork, Utah, claims approximately 30 million unique viewers have downloaded its player.
