CNN Wins Tuesday Primary Race

Democratic Contests In Ohio, Texas, Other States Propel CNN To Overall Win Among Cable Nets

By Linda Moss -- Multichannel News, 3/5/2008 10:15:00 AM

For Tuesday’s primary elections, Cable News Network was the No. 1 network in all of cable among total viewers and adults 25 to 54 in primetime, also beating both Fox News Channel and MSNBC throughout the network’s extended election coverage from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m., CNN said Wednesday.

During primetime, CNN averaged 3.692 million total viewers, while FNC placed second with 2.984 million and MSNBC ranked third with 2.040 million.

In the key demographic 25 to 54 during primetime, CNN was also No. 1 with 1.587 million, nearly doubling the audience of MSNBC’s 876,000 and third-place FNC’s 830,000.

From 8 p.m. to 2 a.m., CNN also outperformed the competition with 2.927 million total viewers, while FNC followed with 2.217 million and MSNBC averaged 1.712 million total viewers. CNN again led the competition in the adults 25-to-54 demographic, averaging 1.291 million while MSNBC placed second in the key demo with 762,000 and FNC followed with 671,000 from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.

CNN peaked with 4.420 million viewers during the 9 p.m. hour, the most-watched hour in all of cable for the day.

CNN’s online audience also surged with more than 11.4 million unique visitors going to CNN.com for March 4, primary election coverage, resulting in 93.4 million page views and 3.5 million video streams served. The Political Ticker generated 2.3 million page views on Tuesday.

Intense interest in the up-and-down Democratic primary rivalry between Hillary Clinton (who won the biggest states, Ohio and Texas, in play Tuesday) has been good for MSNBC, too. The debate between the two on Feb. 26 was MSNBC's highest-rated program ever.

In late January, FNC won the cable news-network race the night of the Republican primary election in Florida.
