Telescope will supply technology for text voting on Lewis Black's Root of All Evil series, which debuts March 12 on Comedy Central.
The Los Angeles-headquartered Telescope will provide SMS services that will allow viewers’ text message poll results on such debates as ‘Oprah Winfrey vs. the Catholic Church,’ ‘Paris Hilton vs. Dick Cheney,’ and ‘Donald Trump vs. Viagra,' which will be debated by comics and then decided on by Black, who will serve as the show’s host, jury and judge. The text results will be displayed in real time at the show’s conclusion, as well as on ComedyCentral.com.
Officials at Telescope, which also conducted text messaging services for American Idol and TNT’s fan polling to determine the champion of the 2008 NBA Slam Dunk contest, said Alltel Wireless will sponsor the show, the first sponsorship deal that the carrier has made for text message voting.
“The real-time nature of‘Lewis Black’s Root of All Evil is compelling, and is particularly prescient given the general election this year,” said Telescope CEO Troy Sample in a statement. “Viewers want to interact in real-time with shows, and this topical format provides a mass-scale game show appeal.”
During the NBA Slam Dunk contest more than 1 million SMS text messages from around the world were casts during a brief window. The result: 78% of the voters selected Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard.
