Billy Crystal might be mahvelous, but when it comes to ratings there’s nothing like the New York Yankees-Boston Red Sox rivalry -- even in the grapefruit league.
Four days after the comedian’s designated-hitter, lead-off appearance against Pittsburgh helped Yankees Entertainment & Sports Network ring up its most-watched spring training telecast ever, yesterday’s Yanks-Sox game averaged 118,000 fans, versus 89,000 for the March 13 contest against the Bucs.
Through yesterday’s telecast, YES’ spring training games averaged a 1.3 TV household rating in the New York DMA, up 44% from last year’s year-to-date delivery of a 0.9 average.
Today at 3 p.m., YES will televise the Yankees vs. Virginia Tech exhibition game to commemorate last year’s shooting tragedy on the college’s campus.
The plans call for a pre-game moment of silences, balloon release and national anthem. There will be two honorary first pitches -- one representing the student body: Jason Dominiczak, last year’s captain of the Virginia Tech rescue squad, and one representing the faculty/staff: police chief Wendell Flinchum). School president Charles W. Steger will be in the broadcast booth us for half-inning, and there are taped interviews with Hokie coach Pete Hughes and Va. Tech players,
