NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams will host the 67th Annual George Foster Peabody Awards ceremony Monday, June 16 in New York City.
The Peabodys, the oldest awards in broadcasting, are considered the among the most prestigious and selective prizes honoring electronic media professionals for excellence and meritorious work by radio and television stations, networks, Webcasters, producing organizations and individuals.
Winners of this year’s Peabody Awards for original broadcast, cablecast and Webcast programs will be announced via Webcast and satellite on April 2 from the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga.
Williams, 48, who succeeded Tom Brokaw in December 2004 on the network’s showcase news broadcast, garnered the George Foster Peabody Award in 2006 for his coverage of Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath.
“Brian Williams is a broadcast journalist who exemplifies on a daily basis the single criterion that defines the Peabody Award—excellence,” Horace Newcomb, director of the Peabody Awards at the University of Georgia, said in a statement. “We are delighted that he will serve as our host and Master of Ceremonies for the 67th Peabody Awards presentation.”
The Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia has administered the Peabody Awards each year since the program’s inception in 1940.
