MLB.com Tees Up Streaming Video Freebies

Fans Can Sample Web Site’s ‘NexDef’ Technology For Free

By Larry Barrett -- Multichannel News, 3/28/2008 8:06:00 AM

Eager to show off its upgraded video streaming technology, MLB.com Friday announced fans can log onto to Major League Baseball’s official Web site for free this weekend to check out its new “NexDef” stream.

The “NexDef” stream is being presented at a rate of 1.2 megabits a second, more than double the top rate previously available on the site, and in a 16x9 widescreen format.

“We are excited to introduce this enhanced stream before Opening Day with these free previews,” Dinn Mann, executive vice president of MLB.com’s content group, said in a statement. “The NexDef plug-in elevates live online viewing to unprecedented heights.”

Beginning with Opening Day, the new streaming rate will available for every out-of-market regular season game through the MLB.TV premium subscription package. Fans can buy the premium package for $19.95 a month or buy a full-year subscription for $119.95.

But Saturday’s exhibition games between the Cleveland Indians and Atlanta Braves (1:10 p.m. ET), Baltimore Orioles and Washington Nationals (6 p.m. ET) and the San Diego Padres vs. the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (9:05 p.m. ET) are available at no charge.
