MLB Connects With PSAs

Spots To Build Awareness For Boys & Girls Clubs, RBI Initiative

By Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, 3/28/2008 3:55:00 PM MT

Major League Baseball will toss out the first pitch on a quartet of new public service announcements to raise awareness for its youth baseball, community and charitable initiatives.

The spots will debut on ESPN’s Opening Night telecast of the Atlanta Braves visiting the Washington Nationals at the new National Park in the nation’s capitol on March 30 at 8:05 p.m.(ET). The PSAs feature children from MLB’s official charity, Boys & Girls Clubs of America and participants of the Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities presented by KPMG program as they interact with big leaguers: Arizona’s Dan Haren, Milwaukee’s Prince Fielder, Philadelphia’s Jimmy Rollins and Detroit’s Dontrelle Willis.

Haren, Willis and Rollins are alumni of Boys & Girls Clubs of America, while Willis and Rollins both participated in MLB’s RBI program.

Four 15-second spots and a like number of 30-second PSAs, created by McCann Erickson, highlight the positive and supportive environments that Boys & Girls Clubs of America and RBI presented by KPMG provide. In addition to airing on ESPN, the spots will run on MLB’s other national telecasters, Fox and TBS, as well as regional/local carriers of the clubs with featured players.

“Major League Baseball remains committed to youth and communities,” said MLB executive vice president of business Tim Brosnan in a statement. “Our partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and our continued support of RBI presented by KPMG demonstrates our dedication to young people, particularly those who are underserved. We are striving to make a difference by providing kids with the tools they will need to succeed on the field and off.”
