By Linda Moss -- Multichannel News, 4/8/2008 6:04:00 PM MT

Discovery Channel Tuesday unveiled an upfront slate filled with specials and series that focus on imagination, exploration and adventure.

“Discovery Channel is a window into the awesome power of the Earth,” Discovery Channel president and general manager John Ford said in a statement. “Using the highest-quality storytelling and filmmaking techniques, our programs delve into topics ranging from science and engineering to anthropology and archaeology.  No one can match Discovery’s ability to invite our viewers into the action as it unfolds.”

The network’s 2008-2009 schedule includes a number of event specials, including: Iditarod, about the 1,151-mile dog-sledding race through the subzero Alaskan wilderness; Inside Planet Earth, a journey from the placid, familiar surface of our world to its mysterious, molten core; Nature’s Greatest Events, which showcases the planet’s most spectacular natural events and the landscapes and animals that are swept up in the drama: and Koppel On Discovery, where the journalist takes an unflinching look at the burning issues confronting our world.

Discovery Channel will also present the TV premiere of the award-winning, debate-defining documentary An Inconvenient Truth, former Vice President Al Gore’s crusade to halt global warming's deadly progress in its tracks by exposing the myths and misconceptions that surround it.

In terms of new series, Discovery Channel’s roster includes: Expeditions WithJosh Bernstein, where the host journeys around the globe to explore fascinating places, unlock historical mysteries and discover ancient civilizations; Coal, which takes viewers hundreds of feet underground to show what life is like for a group of heroic men who brave the dangers of coal mines every day; One Way Out, where extreme-escape artist Jonathan Goodwin tries to break out of tight spots: and Time Warp, where MIT scientist and engineer Jeff Lieberman reveals the world in astonishing and spectacular new ways, by radically changing the lens of time.
