A TV Expedition, Burnett Presumes

Famed Reality Producer Teams With History On Stanley, Livingstone Series

By Linda Moss -- Multichannel News, 4/24/2008 5:17:00 AM

Reality-TV producer Mark Burnett will lead a History series, replaying the search to find Dr. David Livingstone, officials said Thursday.

Stanley and LivingstoneExpedition: Stanley and Livingstone will try to recapture — first-hand — U.S. newsman Henry Morton Stanley’s famous quest to find Dr. Livingstone deep in the heart of Africa. Five elite explorers, each experts in their own field, will retrace Stanley’s journey using  only a compass, and the map and journal from the original expedition.

The series begins production this fall in Tanzania and is slated to air next year. In each episode, the explorers will face the dangerous landscapes of the African nation—from its unforgiving terrain and ferocious wildlife to its mystical noble tribes.

“The network continues to seek new ways of making history relevant and immersive,” History executive vice president and general manage Nancy Dubuc said in a statement. “Mark’s skills at telling compelling stories, his signature cinematic eye, his unequaled ability to shoot in the wildest, most remote locations, his ability to predict and capture the heart of human drama and his innate love of history all blend together to make this a revolutionary new series for History.”

Expedition: Stanley and Livingstone is produced for History by Mark Burnett Productions. Executive producers are Burnett and Maria Baltazzi. Executive producers for History are David McKillop and Charles Nordlander.

“With this exciting new series, I truly feel that I’m going back to my roots and retracing my own passion for creating and producing adventure-driven television,” Burnett said in a prepared statement. “Expedition: Stanley and Livingstone will be an incredible factual historical series which will appeal to a diverse audience and, most importantly, the history buff. This series is the ultimate historical experience.”
