In a rarity for miniseries, the second installment of The Andromeda Strain built on the first night, earning A&E Network some 5 million viewers Tuesday.
Produced by Ridley and Tony Scott, the second half of the miniseries secured 5 million viewers from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m., according to Nielsen Media Research data, a 4% increase over the 4.8 million that tuned in the premiere showing on Memorial Day.
Over its two-day debut, The Andromeda Strain, based on the best-selling novel from Michael Crichton and starring Benjamin Bratt, Eric McCormack, Ricky Schroder, Andre Braugher, Christa Miller, Daniel Dae Kim and Viola Davis, averaged a 3.65 household rating, 4.9 million viewers, 2.4 million 18-to-49 watchers, and 2.7 million adults 25 to 54.
Those performances made The Andromeda Strain the top original movie or miniseries on cable this year to date, according to A&E executives.
It also follows A&E’s best May ever among adults 18 to 34, 18 to 49 and 25 to 54. For the Nielsen month ended May 25, A&E registered an 8% increase with adults 18 to 34 (245,000 of those viewers on average), a 17% advance with the 18-to-49 set (562,000) and a 13% bump with adults 25 to 54 (585,000).
