Motorola Cuts MPEG-4 Encode Rates

Encoding Platform Delivers High-Action Video Using Up To 25% Less Bandwidth

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 6/18/2008 5:21:00 AM

Motorola introduced a dual-channel MPEG-4 encoding platform, primarily aimed at IPTV operators and programmers, that the vendor claims can reduce bandwidth as much as 25% for high-action video compared with its existing MPEG-4 encoders.

The NE (Network Encoder) MPEG-4 Advanced Video Coding standard-definition encoder can process two channels in a single rack-unit chassis. The encoder accepts MPEG-2 content streams over IP as the input source, eliminating the need for external decoders.

Motorola also will release a firmware update for SE (Single-channel Encoder) series MPEG-4 AVC HD and SD encoders that also will improve their efficiency to let operators deliver video services at lower bit rates. The company said with the upgrade, SE encoders can deliver high-action sports video using up to 25% less bandwidth.

Motorola acquired Modulus Video, a developer of MPEG-4 encoders, last year.
