EGT Debuts Triple-Threat Video Processor For HD

Unit Provides Transcoding, Statistical Multiplexing And Downconversion

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 6/19/2008 6:15:00 AM

EGT is packing three video-processing features—each geared toward letting cable operators deliver more high-definition content—into the VIPr Closed-Loop Transcoder appliance.

The unit handles MPEG-4-to-MPEG-2 transcoding; provides statistical multiplexing to fit three MPEG-2 HDs in one QAM; and can downconvert an HD feed into standard-def.

What makes the device unique, EGT chief technology officer John Hartung said, is that it combines transcoding and statmuxing.

That way, “you have access to the original encoding parameters, which lets you improve quality,” he said.

The VIPr Closed-Loop Transcoder, based on Intel quad-core processors, processes two channels per rack unit. That means that in three rack units, the system can statmux six HDs into two QAMs, Hartung said.

The product, currently in trials in several MSO labs, will be shipping in the third quarter.

A full-function unit will cost about $10,000 to $12,000 per channel, or $60,000 to $72,000 for a three-unit stack, according to EGT.

EGT plans to demo the unit at the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers’ Cable-Tec Expo conference in Philadelphia next week.
