SAG President Calls Such Talk ‘A Distraction’

The Screen Actors Guild’s contract is set to expire tomorrow, but don’t expect a walkout.

The president of the U.S. Screen Actors Guild said Sunday the membership has no immediate plans to strike against Hollywood studios, even though their contract is scheduled to run out June 30.

SAG head Alan Rosenberg“We have taken no steps to initiate a strike authorization vote by the members of Screen Actors Guild,” said SAG president Alan Rosenberg in a statement Sunday. “Any talk about a strike or a management lockout at this point is simply a distraction. The Screen Actors Guild national negotiating committee is coming to the bargaining table every day in good faith to negotiate a fair contract for actors.”

Talks between the parties continued over the weekend. Observers suggest the negotiations will continue at least through the Fourth of July weekend.

SAG leaders have opposed a deal reached between producers and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. Results of voting by that 70,000-member union are due July 8.
