By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 7/20/2008 8:01:00 PM

NBC Universal has picked Sun Microsystems to provide the video streaming and Web server technology platforms for its Web site for the 2008 Olympic Games, NBCOlympics.com.

NBCU is using a total of 160 Sun Fire X4450 and Sun Fire X4150 servers, which are based on Intel’s Xeon processors, to run NBCOlympics.com.

In addition, Sun’s professional services group will provide installation and engineering support for NBCOlympics.com leading up to and during the games.

The value of the contract was not disclosed.

NBCOlympics.com will provide approximately 2,200 hours of live event competition during the games in Beijing, China, from August 8 to 24.

At the site, users will be able to choose from among as many as 20 concurrent streams covering 25 Olympic sports.

In addition, the site will offer more than 3,000 hours of on-demand access to full-event replays and highlights, including daily recaps of key events, commentator analysis and athlete-specific clips.

Perkins Miller, NBC Sports and Olympics senior vice president of digital media, said in a statement: "In 2008, NBCOlympics.com is redefining the Olympic experience and Sun Microsystems has been an important partner in that effort. We have recognized the growing online viewership for the Olympics and have worked with Sun to create a powerful and feature-rich Web experience for NBCOlympics.com.”

NBC owns the exclusive U.S. media rights to the Olympic Games through 2012, which includes Beijing in 2008, Vancouver in 2010 and London in 2012.
