180 Million And Counting

Record Number of Viewers Taking in Beijing Action

By Larry Barrett -- Multichannel News, 8/16/2008 4:56:00 AM EDT

NBC Universal continues to enjoy outstanding ratings for its Summer Olympics coverage, attracting more than 180 million viewers through the first week of the games—up more than 15 million viewers from the 165 million who tuned in through the first seven days of the 2004 games in Athens.

Between NBC and its cable networks—including MSNBC, Oxygen and USA Network—this year’s telecasts are averaging 30.6 million viewers in primetime, a household rating of 17.7 and a 30 share.

For the seven nights of the games to date, NBC's average of 30.6 million viewers beat the average combined totals of the other three networks by 171 percent: CBS (5.1 million), ABC (3.2 million) and Fox (3.0 million).

Through Thursday night, NBC's primetime Olympics average viewership was outdrawing the viewership of the next 14 top-scoring ad-supported English-language broadcast and cable networks combined.

Online, NBCOlympics.com has generated more than 25.6 million streams, 15 million more than the combined total of video streams downloaded for the entire Athens and Torino games, a 138% improvement.
