By Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, 8/21/2008 6:51:00 AM

A pair of documentaries about the presumptive Presidential candidates tallied big viewing numbers for Fox News Channel.

Airing under the Character & Conduct moniker Monday and Tuesday in the 8 p.m. hour, the film on Republican hopeful Sen. John McCain (Ariz.), hosted by Eric Shawn, outperformed the one focused on Democratic candidate Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.).

The Character & Conduct doc on McCain averaged 2.61 million viewers on Aug. 19 including 569,000 adults 25 to 54, according to Nielsen Media Research data. The night before the Obama film, hosted by Bill Hemmer, garnered some 2.34 million watchers, with 493,000 among the news demo.

The documentaries topped the competition in the time slots as MSNBC’s Countdown averaged 1.27 million total viewers and 436,000 persons 25 to 54 on Aug. 19 and 1.12 million and 375,000 of the aforementioned demo the night before. CNN’s Election Center had 499,000 total viewers, including 178,000 on Tuesday and 687,000 and 240,000 adults 25 to 54 on Aug. 18.

The documentaries also surpassed the July averages for The O’Reilly Factor: With host Bill O’Reilly on vacation, the Character & Conduct programming ran in the show’s time slot. In July, Factor averaged 2.25 million total viewers and 444,000 adults 25 to 54, according to Nielsen data.
