Copper Thieves Fleece AT&T Again

West Virginia Caper Leads Telco to Offer Another Reward

By Linda Haugsted -- Multichannel News, 9/4/2008 7:02:00 AM

AT&T has been hit again by copper thieves—this time in West Virginia—and is offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators.

The latest theft was in the Little Birch area of Braxton County. According to local coverage of the issue, the increasing prices for metals at salvage yards has led to brazen thefts, from utility wire and public monuments to gutters and downspouts from residents’ homes.

This is just the latest reward program announced by utilities to try to curb copper theft. AT&T in mid-August established a $10,000 reward program in California in the hopes of bringing the copper wranglers to justice.

“We think the reward will motivate people with information to come forward,” said Erika Thompson, vice president and general manager of wireless operations for AT&T in Virginia and West Virginia.
