MGM HD Rolls Out On Bright House

HD Service Launched In Florida, Indy, Detroit, Other Markets

By Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, 9/24/2008 5:36:00 AM

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. has signed a carriage a pact for MGM HD with Bright House Networks.

Coming a little more than a year after the network launched Sept. 18, 2007, the pact, terms of which were not disclosed, will place MGM HD before Bright House’s 2.4 million customers. The service has already launched on the operator’s systems serving Tampa Bay, Orlando, Indianapolis, Detroit, Birmingham, Ala. and Bakersfield, Calif.

“MGM HD’s awareness is growing at a rapid rate and we are delighted to be partnering with Bright House Networks on this agreement,” said Douglas Lee, MGM executive vice president of digital media, in a statement. “With the demand for quality high definition entertainment at an all time high, we are in a great position as a major supplier of award-winning films and we look forward to providing Bright House customers with an engaging theatrical experience through our HD channel.”

Drawing from a library of 4,100 films, MGM HD claims it is only one of a handful of HD networks to offer content around the clock in true 1080i. Among its HD filem offerings are the Academy Award-winning The Black Stallion, Usual Suspects, Leaving Las Vegas and West Side Story, as well as such favorites as Hotel Rwanda, Throw Momma From The Train and RoboCop

The network also has distribution deals with DirecTV -- its first carrier, which launched the service last Oct. 10 -- Dish Network, RCN Corp., Verizon’s FiOS TV, Time Warner Cable and Comcast.

The latter owns 20% of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc., the HD service's parent.
