History Wednesday announced the promotion of Peter Gaffney to senior vice president, programming strategy, scheduling and acquisitions.

Since 2002, Gaffney has served as vice president of scheduling and acquisitions for the network, where he developed and implemented the programming schedule for History and History International.

In his new role, Gaffney will be responsible for strategic planning, scheduling and acquisition strategies designed to increase ratings, impressions and viewer loyalty for the History and History International brands.

“In these highly competitive times, Peter has proven to be an excellent business leader and one of the best strategists in our industry,” Nancy Dubuc, History’s executive vice president and general manager, said in a statement. “With an outstanding track record of accomplishments, he has been instrumental to the rapid growth and momentum of History and History International.”

Network officials said Gaffney played a key role in History’s acquisition of HBO’s Band of Brothers as well as other key programming additions.

Prior to joining History, Gaffney was vice president of program planning and acquisitions for American Movie Classics.
