Setanta Sports has signed its first cable carriage pact, inking an agreement with Cox Communications.

Signed in mid-September, the master corporate affiliate agreement, terms of which were not disclosed, initially calls for the premium soccer-centric channel to be accessible to Cox subscribers in Northern Virginia, in the Fairfax and Fredericksburg markets.

Setanta also has carriage deals with satellite providers DirecTV and Dish Network, as well as Verizon Communications’ FiOS TV.

A Setanta spokesman said there is a strong base of soccer fans in the Washington, D.C. market to whom the network should appeal.

Setanta covers Arsena;s' Emmanuel Adebayor as part of its Barclays Premier League rights dealCarrying a monthly retail price of $12.99, the service is now available in those Cox markets, where subscribers can watch more than 1,000 live events, topped by UK and European futbol fare, notably the Barclays Premier League, the UEFA Champions League, the FA Cup, FIFA 2010 World Cup qualifiers and the UEFA 2012 European Championship qualifiers. The service also presents rugby action, including the annual Tri-Nations and Six Nations tournaments and The Heineken European Cup.

“We are thrilled to be made available to Cox Communications' customers in Northern Virginia,” said Roger Hall, managing director of Setanta Sports International, in a statement. “More and more Americans have been asking for International soccer and rugby in their homes and we look forward to bringing Cox subscribers the authentic soccer and rugby coverage they want.”

Noted Cox Northern Virginia vice president of sales and marketing Christine Pantoya: “Cox is happy to offer subscribers access to sports programming they can't see anywhere else on TV with the availability of Setanta Sports. Offering Setanta Sports to our customers opens the door for soccer fans to get more of what they are in to.”
