YouTube—breaking out of its short-clip format—has signed a deal with CBS to provide several full-length TV shows from the network’s archive like Star Trek and other content, including this season’s premieres of Showtime Networks’ Dexter and Californication.
The Google-owned site is now streaming full episodes with old CBS shows at www.youtube.com/cbs including Star Trek, The Young and the Restless and the original Beverly Hills 90210, as well as the two Showtime shows.
The episodes offered through YouTube currently include promotional ads for other CBS shows. YouTube said CBS would sell the advertisements around the shows, with the companies splitting ad revenue, Reuters reported.
CBS already has content-syndication deals for full-length episodes with other video sites, including Veoh, Joost and TidalTV.
To date, YouTube’s content-distribution deals with commercial video producers have been for short-form content, designed to promote on linear TV channels.
For example, last month the Google-owned site announced a deal with Discovery Communications to host nine channels featuring clips from Discovery's network brands.
Earlier this week, YouTube announced a “click-to-buy” program to start to sell media, such as music, through partners Amazon.com and Apple’s iTunes Store.
