In a limited attempt to exploit corporate synergy, Sony announced that for a two-week window owners of Internet-connected Bravia HDTVs will be able to rent Sony Pictures’ Hancock prior to retail DVD release.
The movie, which stars Will Smith, will be available to rent for $9.99 for a 24-hour period from Oct. 28 until Nov. 10. Customers must have Bravia televisions equipped with Sony's Bravia Internet Video Link, a device sold separately for $300.
Sony also is throwing in a free Blu-ray Disc copy of Hancock ($39.95 retail price) to customers who rent the movie through their Bravia TVs.
The move “demonstrates Sony's unique ability to combine its innovative hardware with content created by its own movie studio,” the company said in announcing the promotion.
Sony Pictures said it is in discussions to offer another high-definition video-on-demand movie day-and-date with its DVD release, with premium pricing, on Internet-connected Bravia TVs “and other platforms.”
The company will offer three versions of Hancock over the Internet: a 720p HD stream and two standard-definition streams with different encoding for lower-bandwidth customers.
