Comcast SportsNet NW Blazes Distribution Deals

Country Cablevision, Monroe Telephone Join Carriage Roster; Negotiations Continue With Other Key Providers

By Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, 10/15/2008 6:51:00 AM

Comcast SportsNet Northwest signed distribution deals with a pair of local providers.

Country Cablevision, serving the Salem, Ore. area and Monroe Telephone, are launching the regional sports network, which carries games of the National Basketball Association’s Portland Blazers and the National Hockey League’s Vancouver Canucks. Deal terms were not disclosed.

Comcast SportsNet Northwest will launch on Country Cablevision (channel 9) and Monroe Telephone (channel 153) before the Trail Blazers’ first game on its air Nov. 1.

The carriage contracts come on the heels of a recent deal with Canby Telcom in Oregon and the network’s rollout into the Seattle region on Comcast Cable and Verizon’s FiOS. All told, Comcast SportsNet Northwest officials said the network has deals with seven providers reaching more than 200 communities in Oregon and Washington.

The service, which is contracted to present 55 Blazers games, 33 in high-definition during the 2008-09 NBA season, has holes in its distribution lineup. A network spokesman said it continues to negotiate with DirecTV, Dish Network, Charter Communications and other smaller providers in its territory.

The service will also present about 25 Canucks contests, as part of 60 NHL out-of-market games this season.
