TBS Connects With Boston-Tampa Tussle

ALCS Yields Viewership, Demo Gains Exceeding 40%

By Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, 10/17/2008 1:11:00 PM MT

Bolstered by an exciting fifth game that produced the series biggest audience yet and ensured another contest Saturday night, TBS has recorded significant ratings improvement with its coverage of the American League Championship series.

J.D. Drew (left( and Dustin Pedroia exult after Boston's 8-7 victory in Game 5 of the ALCSTBS, through the first five games of the ALCS between the Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox, averaged a 3.9 national household rating, 4.48 million households and more than 6.09 million viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research data.

Those numbers represent gains of 40%, 40% and 42%, respectively, over TBS’s four-game average with the 2007 National League Champioship Series in which the Colorado Rockies swept the Arizona Diamondbacks. TBS, which holds exclusive rights to MLB’s four Division Series, alternated the LCS with Fox, which also had the rights to the World Series.

The “very funny” network enjoyed its best game with the MLB postseason to date with the Bosox’s stunning victory in which they rallied from a 7-0 deficit with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to pull the game out by a run in the bottom of the ninth. The game averaged a 4.7 U.S. household rating and 7.21 million viewers on average, capped by a 5.3 mark and 7.88 million viewers from the time Boston mounted its comeback in the home half of the seventh at 10:55 p.m., until the game’s conclusion. Game 6 is scheduled in Tampa Saturday night at 8 p.m.

Gauged on a demo basis, TBS is also scoring with Rays-Sox, registering a 60% advance to 1.22 million persons 18 to 34; a 48% to 2.71 million persons 18 to 49; and a 50% uptick to 2.85 million persons 25 to 54, according to Nielsen data.
