A&E Cleans Up With Second Season Of Bratt Series

Orders 13 More ‘Cleaner’ Episodes For 2009 Debut

By Multichannel News Staff -- Multichannel News, 10/27/2008 8:03:00 AM

A&E Network has ordered a sophomore season of drama series, The Cleaner.

The series, A&E’s first scripted series in over six years, will go into production shortly on a 13-episode second season, which will debut sometime next year. The Cleaner is produced by CBS Paramount Television in association with Once A Frog Productions for A&E Network

Based on a cume basis, The Cleaner’s first season averaged 4.2 million weekly viewers, 2.4 million of whom were adults 25 to 54 and 2.2 were persons 18 to 49, according to Nielsen Media Research data. From the demo perspective, The Cleaner emerged as A&E top original drama series, doubling the audience of previous entries Nero Wolfe and 100 Centre Street.

The series, inspired by the true story of real-life interventionist Warren Boyd, stars Benjamin Bratt as William “The Cleaner” Banks who, after hitting rock-bottom from his own addictions after the birth of his daughter, strikes a tentative deal with God. In exchange for a second chance, he vows to kick his addictions and dedicate his life to helping others. With an assist from his unconventional team, he helps people get clean from their own addictions by any means necessary.

“The Cleaner has garnered critical acclaim and a loyal audience in its first season,” said Bob DeBitetto, president and general manager of A&E Network and Bio Channel, in a statement. “Its authentic, dramatic storytelling combined with superb acting, led by an exceptional performance by Benjamin Bratt, has struck a chord with A&E viewers. It is exactly the sort of high-quality, engaging programming that our fans have come to expect.”

The series was created and is executive produced by Jonathan Prince (Cane, American Dreams) and Robert Munic. Jay Silverman and Warren Boyd are co-executive producers.
