Suddenlink To Launch VOD In 23 Markets

Operator Uses SeaChange VOD Software, Motorola Servers; Initial Launch In Texas

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 10/28/2008 5:10:00 AM

Suddenlink Communications plans to roll out video-on-demand services to 23 markets, based on a new centralized VOD network architecture that uses management software from SeaChange International.

Suddenlink already offers VOD in West Virginia and is expanding on-demand services to customers market by market in a new rollout, which began in September in seven cities in West Texas.

The operator is using SeaChange’s Axiom On Demand content delivery platform supporting nine Motorola video-on-demand servers in a centralized architecture. The software is running at Suddenlink’s media operations center in College Station, Texas to provide VOD to digital cable customers in a geographic region covering several thousand square miles.

“From the outset, our goal was to build a centralized VOD operation that spanned multiple [Motorola Digital Addressable Controller headends] and markets, minimized equipment and network elements, and leveraged our national backbone while minimizing the need to have operational VOD personnel in every market,” Suddenlink vice president for advanced technology Gregg Grigaitis said, in a statement.

Suddenlink contracted with SeaChange’s professional services team to build the VOD platform.
