CNBC Nabs Six Business, Financial Emmy Nominations

Showing Best Among Cable News Nets

By Linda Haugsted -- Multichannel News, 11/3/2008 5:37:00 AM

CNBC topped all cable networks and most broadcast channels with six Emmy nominations in the sixth annual competition for business and financial Emmys.

Only CBS, with 12 nominations, fared better.

Multiple nominations by cable networks were also claimed by Bloomberg News (three), HDNet and CNN (both with two each). Other nominees include ABC and PBS(four each), Minyanviller.com and Newsweek (one each).

Four of CNBC's nominations were for content on the Business Nation series: three for outstanding reporting of a business story within a news magazine or long-form program and one for outstanding investigative reporting by a news magazine. Documentaries on Nike and Ultimate Fighting were each nominated.

CNBC will compete against Bloomberg in the latter category: one of its nominations is for a documentary on the human toll created by the development of ethanol. It also earned nominations for best reporting of a business story within a regular newscast and best investigative reporting, for a story on hidden fees on 401(k)s.

HDNet's nods were both for segments within Dan Rather Reports while CNN's honors were for a documentary on the mortgage meltdown by its special investigations unit and for "new approaches in business reporting" for an area on its CNNmoney.com Web page.

Networks were also nominated for the promotions they created to pump viewing for business and financial reporting. CNN was nominated for promotions for God's Warriors and Planet in Peril. MSNBC and CNBC each received promotional Emmy nominations.

David Schlesinger, editor-in-chief of Reuters News at Thomson Reuters, will receive a lifetime achievement Emmy at the awards, which will be held Dec. 2 at the Rainbow Room in New York City.
