The second-season finale of Army Wives marched off to a solid performance.

The women-targeted network’s top drama series finished its second campaign Nov. 2 with a 3.1 household rating and 3.9 million total viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research data.

Cable’s top drama among women 18 to 49 counted 1.6 million of those watchers with the sophomore-season concluder and 1.6 million women 25-to-54 watchers.

The numbers were in keeping with Army Wives’ season-long performance, which averaged a 3.1 rating and 3.8 million total viewers.

Based on the book Army Wives: The Unwritten Code of Military Marriage by Tanya Biank, who serves as a consultant, Army Wives is produced by ABC Studios.

The drama about the struggles, dreams and friendships of a diverse group of women -- and one man -- living with their spouses and families on an active army post,  will return for a third season in 2009.

The series stars Kim Delaney, Sally Pressman, Brigid Brannagh, Brian McNamara, Sterling Brown, Wendy Davis, Drew Fuller and Catherine Bell.

Mark Gordon and The Mark Gordon Co.’s president of production, Deborah Spera serve as executive-producers.
