Obama Names Transition Group Leaders

Don Gips Reportedly In Running For Top FCC Post

By Ted Hearn -- Multichannel News, 11/13/2008 3:23:00 AM

Washington—The Obama-Biden transition team said Wednesday that former National Cable & Telecommunications Association president Tom Wheeler will participate in a working group “responsible for the science, technology, space and arts agencies” in preparation for the new administration in January.

Others named announced include former Federal Communications Commission chairman Reed Hundt, who will help oversee international trade and economics agencies. Hundt is reportedly interested in being named U.S. Trade Representative.

Don Gips (pictured), former chief of the FCC's International Bureau under Hundt, was named co-chair of the transition's Agency Review Working Group. Gips had already been named to the Advisory Board of the Obama-Biden Transition Project. Gips is reportedly a candidate for FCC chairman or for the Obama administration's chief technology office (CTO).

"The Agency Review Teams will complete a thorough review of key departments, agencies and commissions of the United States government, as well as the White House, to provide the President-elect, Vice President-elect and key advisors with information needed to make strategic policy, budgetary, and personnel decisions prior to the inauguration," the Obama transition office said in a prepared statement.

"The Teams will begin their efforts by the end of the week, and will ensure that senior appointees have the information necessary to complete the confirmation process, lead their departments, and begin implementing signature policy initiatives immediately after they are sworn in."
