PSA Gets DTV Word Out to African-American, Hispanic Homes

Cable Operators, Congress Get Behind Public Service Announcements

By Linda Haugsted -- Multichannel News, 11/18/2008 4:33:00 AM

In response to surveys which show that some ethnic groups are especially at risk for service disruption during the Feb. 17, 2009 digital television transition, the nation's top operators are promoting a series of public service announcements featuring African-American and Hispanic legislators to inform people in those demographics.

According to data compiled by Nielsen Media Research in July, multicultural audiences—especially African American and Hispanic households—are the most unprepared for the transition.

The public service effort, spearheaded by Comcast Corp., Time Warner Cable and Charter Communications, will feature 21 members of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, Black Caucus and Hispanic Caucus.

The campaign will underscore cable's long-standing DTV educational effort, noted Comcast executive vice president David Cohen, adding that "this unique PSA campaign lets Senate and Congressional leaders talk directly to their constituents about how to prepare for the transition."
