DirecTV Pulls Plug on Championship Gaming Series

Competitive Gaming League Shuttered After Two-Year Run

By R. Thomas Umstead -- Multichannel News, 11/18/2008 12:55:00 PM

DirecTV announced Tuesday that it is discontinuing its ambitious international video game league, the Championship Gaming Series, after two years of operations.

The satellite service, along with internationally-based satellite providers BSkyB and Star, said in a statement that it could not financially sustain the league, in which teams of top pro gamers from around the world competed for video game supremacy and a $1 million prize. In the states, DirecTV aired 45 hours of coverage from the GCS league in 2008, while G4 ran 36 hours of content from the games.

“While the content was ahead of its time and we were extremely proud of what we accomplished, it became increasingly clear as this ambitious project evolved, that profitability was too far in the future for us to sustain operations in the interim,” the statement said.
