Verizon Communications Inc. has applied to serve Wilmington, Del., with its FiOS video service.
The provider's application must now be vetted by the city's Cable Video and Telecommunications Commission, the finance committee of the city council and the full council. If approved, Verizon will provide those services in competition with Comcast Corp., the video incumbent there.
The application follows months of discussions with city officials, according to Verizon. The provider has applied for a 10-year franchise, and is vowing to make its FiOS-branded services available throughout Wilmington within five years of the date service is introduced in the city.
Verizon anticipates providing three public, educational and government channels to the community plus financial support to operate those channels, as well as paying 5% of its gross revenues as franchise fees. Verizon will also open a local service office where customers and pick up equipment.
The company currently provides FiOS Internet services in parts of Wilmington.
