ESPN Taps In Multiyear Deal for Women’s British Open

Will Telecast All Fours Rounds Live Beginning in 2010

By Larry Barrett -- Multichannel News, 12/3/2008 6:22:00 AM

ESPN Wednesday announced it has acquired the rights to all four rounds of the Ricoh Women’s British Open golf tournament, including 12 live hours of coverage, beginning in 2010.

This will mark the first time that all four rounds of the major tournament will be aired live in the U.S., network officials said. The deal also secures expanded television and digital media rights for ESPN International and comprehensive rights for a variety of digital platforms.

“We are pleased to offer golf fans unprecedented live coverage of both the Women’s British Open and the Open Championship on television as well as many other devices,” Leah LaPlaca, ESPN’s vice president of programming and acquisitions, said in a statement. “With this new deal, ESPN will be able to showcase the Women’s British Open like never before, with live coverage of all four rounds.”

The wide-ranging agreement will cover multiple businesses around the world through various ESPN platforms—ESPN, ABC, ESPN2, ESPN International (ESPN in Latin America/Caribbean, TSN and RDS in Canada, ESPN Star Sports in Asia, and ESPN360 services in Mexico, Chile and Brazil), ESPN.com, ESPN360.com, and ESPN Mobile Properties.
