DirecTV Spins Out Of NASCAR Interactive Package

Satellite Leader Looks To Revamp PPV Service

By R. Thomas Umstead -- Multichannel News, 12/10/2008 10:31:00 AM

DirecTV says it will look to revamp its NASCAR Hot Pass in-car multi-camera subscription service, beginning in 2009.

The $99 per year service, which allows viewers to watch the race from the in-car perspective of five different NASCAR drivers each on a separate channel, will “evolve” into a new, as yet determined offering that will be available free to all DirecTv customers beginning in January, according to a DirecTV spokesman.

The spokesman would not provide specific details on the new look for Hot Pass, which DirecTV launched in 2007 after PPV purveyor In Demand discontinued a similar in-car interactive product in 2006. He also would not say how many subscribers the service generated last season.

The news follows DirecTV's Tuesday announcement that owing to the economy it had imposed a hiring freeze and that it would delay all but its most important capital projects.
