Updated: Young Reports Progress In Retrans Talks With Dish

Gets Contract Extension Until 7 p.m. Thursday Night As Negotiations Continue

By Linda Moss -- Multichannel News, 12/11/2008 9:33:00 AM

Young Broadcasting Thursday afternoon reported that it was making progress in its retransmission-consent talks with Dish Network, reaching a contract extension until 7 p.m. ET.

The broadcaster is negotiating to reach a new deal with the satellite provider, to keep its 10 stations on Dish’s lineup. Their old deal expired Wednesday.

“We have made some progress in our effort to reach a new agreement with Dish,” the Young Broadcasting stations, including KRON-TV in San Francisco, each said on their Web sites. “Based on this we extended our contract with Dish until 7 p.m. tonight. We will continue to make every reasonable effort to reach an agreement. KRON-TV4 will keep you updated.”

Dish Network couldn’t be reached for comment Thursday.

Young Broadcasting is seeking cash compensation for carriage of its stations, a proposal that Dish Network has apparently balked at.

On its Web site, Young’s KRON told viewers, “The fair compensation that we are asking for as part of our contract with Dish is about a penny per day per subscriber. We believe that a penny per day per subscriber is a reasonable demand for our award-winning news, sports and entertainment programming. It is considerably less than the amount paid by Dish to less popular satellite/cable networks.”

In addition to KRON, Young Broadcasting owns WLNS-TV in Lansing, Mich., WKRN-TV in Nashville, Tenn., WTEN-TV in Albany, N.Y., WRIC-TV in Richmond, Va., WATE-TV in Knoxville, Tenn., WBAY-TV in Green Bay, Wis., KLFY-TV in Lafayette, La., KELO-TV in Sioux Falls, S.D., and KWQC-TV in Davenport, Iowa.
